Engineer's Log
Society of Broadcast Engineers Picnic

Friday, June 23, 2017:  Steve Smit, Engineer for Salem Communications in the Twin Cities, was in his office working on a problem where an underground telephone cable needs to be replaced near one of his transmitter sites.  Seems the railroad wants too much money to allow a cable replacement on railroad property.  It has been an ongoing story for four years with two accidental cable breaks of a temporary cable lying on the ground.  Steve has a stand-up desk to work at, a good choice for a busy guy.

Mark was there to do annual FCC required occupied bandwidth and RF harmonic measurements on Steve's four AM stations.  All went well.

This is one of Steve's three transmitter sites.  Stations WWTC 1280 KHz AM and KDIZ 1570 KHz AM are combined onto the towers.

Then it was off to the Society of Broadcast Engineer's annual picnic at one of the Shoreview transmitter sites.  About 30 showed up to talk shop.

Of course, food was served.  What gathering would be complete without that?

Steve Brown, on the right, received the Chapter 17 Engineer of the Year award.  Good going, Steve!

Then it was in the building to inspect some of the television transmitters.  Lots to talk about.

The stories go on and on.  Stop in again sometime.  I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
