Engineer's Log
Summer SBE Picnic

Friday, June 24, 2016:   Mark and Paula attended the annual Chapter 17 Society of Broadcast Engineers picnic at the Shoreview, MN, transmitter site.
Guys were comparing engineer notes while food was cooking on a BBQ.  Yes, that is flame.  Engineers like well-done food!

There was no shortage of food or people to eat it.

The site has two 1436 foot towers that are home to WCCO and KSTP television along with nine FM broadcast stations.

A tour was given showing off the television transmitters on site.

In the back there is the "RF plumbing" where transmitters are combined before they are connected to antennas.

Digital television is an interesting change from traditional analog television.  Digital signals are monitored for potential problems.

(l-r) It was a big day for Randy Greenly who retired at 62 from Minnesota Public Radio that day.  He was congratulated by Mike Hendrickson who retired from American Public Media just six months before.  The two worked together for years.

The stories go on and on.  Stop in again sometime.  I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
