Engineer's Log of Mark W. Persons
A visit to KLOH Radio

Thursday, August 29, 2013:  I traveled to KLOH Radio in Pipestone, Minnesota.   Dinner that evening, at the Calumet Inn, was with Wally Christensen (on the left).  Wally, along with his sons Collin and Carmen, own KLOH, KISD, and KJOE Radio.  It is a family organization and has been for more than 30 years.

Back in the early 1950's, my father Charlie looked at owning a radio station in a small town.  One of the possible locations was Pipestone, which did not yet have a radio station.  In the end, we moved to Ely, Minnesota, where our family owned WELY Radio.

It is a small world.  Mark

Friday, August 30, 2013:  The sun came up to a beautiful orange sky.

Sunrises and sunsets are usually breathtaking on the prairies.

Then, there they were, the KLOH AM Radio towers at sunrise standing proud over the land.

Their mighty 9400 watt signal is heard in three states on 1050 KHz.

Station manager Collin Christensen showed off his new Nautel 30 KW FM transmitter.

Running at just 21 KW, it is loafing along on KISD Radio.

This all solid-state transmitter is a high-tech box of technology.

The stories go on and on.  Stop in again sometime.  I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
