Engineer's Log of Mark W. Persons
Radio Station Rescue

Saturday, July 13, 2013:

Radio Broadcast Contract Engineer Jim Offerdahl and son Joe stopped by M. W. Persons to pick up a used high voltage power transformer.

They needed it to get KCLD-FM Radio in St. Cloud, Minnesota, back on the air.

Their original high voltage transformer failed and that put their 30 KW Broadcast Electronics transmitter off.

Jim is seen here starting to tie the transformer down to a trailer bed for transport to St. Cloud, about 60 miles away.

This transformer was originally used in a Sparta 15 KW FM transmitter.  It is configured as two 3-phase secondary windings, which could only be combined for 5000 volts by using twelve diodes to rectify each AC winding set into DC, then added together in series.

Jim called back later to say it all worked out just fine by putting the transmitter on at half power.  That will suffice until a new 30 KW transformer is delivered and installed.

The stories go on and on.  Stop in again sometime.  I'll leave the soldering iron on for you.
