Millenium Audio Consoles

Radio World article on Millennium Consoles by Mark Persons
RS-12D Console installed at KKCQ Radio in Fosston, MN
RS-18D Console installed at WJON Radio in St. Cloud, MN

Available in 6, 12, 18, and 24 channel sizes, Millenium consoles all feature 3 output buses, complete remote control and metering, a comprehensive monitor section with standard eight position selector, and a clock/timer. Models differ only in their channel count and meter overbridge. (The six channel has three meters, the 12 and 18 - five, and the 24 - seven. The 18 and 24 channel units also feature an auxiliary cutout for an extra meter or clock/timer.)

The soft touch rubber keypads offer the best of all worlds. They feel great, they illuminate beautifully (with high brightness LED’s that won’t burn out), and they offer ultra dependability with 1,000,000 rated quiet, reliable operations.

The Clock/Timer is part of the Radio Systems CT-6 line so it connects serially to our external master driver to function as a clock slave readout. The display switches modes between clock and up-timer via front panel console switches, which also control all timer functions.

Millenium consoles make extensive use of VCA technology and electronic switching. This means that there is no audio path through any switch or fader - so as these controls get dirty over time, they will never affect the quality of your audio. In fact, there is no audio at all on the front panel except for the cue speaker! This dramatic lack of internal audio wiring and long cable runs inside all Millenium consoles means exceptional RFI immunity and overall low noise levels.

There are microprocessors inside so it’s very smart up top. The easiest way to describe the Millenium console logic features is to say - "Yes, it does that". Every remote, timer, muting, channel and remote control function is available and programmable by input via internal jumper straps. Most are activated by the console channel on/off switches below. Functions that require external logic boxes on other consoles (yes, even on some of Radio Systems’ previous models) are now standard in the new Millenium.

Remote control is conveniently and fully accessible on a 15-pin "D" connector for every channel, each selectable by A/B input. You don’t need any external interface boxes to gain access to all channel remote outputs and logic inputs such as channel on/off control and lamp control.

Even the cue function allows user optimization with options to enable cue via the front panel switch or automatically whenever the channel is turned off. For mic inputs, this cue switch doubles as a momentary mute "cough" function.

Use the very versatile 8-position selector/switcher provided to control any external device or Millenium option product, including the squawk box, audio switcher, and digital hybrid. Normally open switch contacts and LED anodes (programmable to operate at 5V or 12V) are conveniently available on internal connectors. Or, use the Radio Systems’ logic card to add logic - follow lamp drivers and exclusive holding 4 and 8 gang switch operation.

All input and output audio wiring is via unique, ultra-convenient, removable barrier strips. These connectors simplify initial installation, and provide for quick future wiring changes.

All parts and sub assemblies, including faders and circuit boards, are socketed or connectorized. Repair involves simply removing the bad part or circuit board and plugging in a new one.

Inputs are fully level agile. Mic through line is accommodated on a per-input basis with no need for external "matchbox" type amplifiers. Loop-through processor points allow the connection of external processors and outboard signal routing.

The input card accepts a wide range of source levels. Each input is balanced and bridging, and can be set from mic through line level (-60 to +10 dBm). Patch points are provided for mid-stage processing.

The output card provides balanced, line-level program, audition, and mono sends. Level adjustments on this card allow user setting of all output levels, meter and peak LED calibrations, and external input feeds. Multiple monitor outputs provide muted and "dimmable" sends for external, user-provided monitor amps.

A rugged, external, rack mount power supply provides all operating voltages. Each supply is separately fused and has its own LED indicator and a separate ground return to minimize cross talk and RFI.

The complete monitor section includes four stereo external inputs and an eight position switcher for audio routing or machine control. The console includes on-board cue and headphone amps, and two monitor sends.

While Millenium consoles provide an exceptional array of features "right out of the box", a full range of options for special and extended applications is still available. These boards install on the back wall of the console and connect easily with the ribbon cables provided.

The remote card expands the remote control interface on any input by adding on/off relay source control and providing opto-isolated access to the console on lamp and on/off channel control.

The logic board adds smarts to the 8-position switcher. Set programming straps on this card to enable the switcher in an 8-bank or two 4-bank exclusive holding switch arrays with LED lamp follow indicators. The logic board provides control, and is required, for the use of one or two squawk box cards or audio switcher cards.

Add a squawk box card and talk hands free with any combination of up to 8 two-way studio speakers or Millenium consoles (logic card required).

Add a DA card for inexpensive 2 input x 4 output stereo audio distribution with independent level adjust.

Use one or two 4 source audio switcher cards in conjunction with the logic card and the front panel selector switches to provide stereo audio input or output routing in 1x4, 2x4, or 1x8 configurations.

Additional options include a plexi-glass copy stand, colored fader knobs to color code the inputs, punch block harnesses, and individual source cables made to your length and connector specifications.
